This is just a quick note to tell you how extremely satisfied I am with the course I went on last week. It surpassed my expectations in all aspects. You are a first-rate instructor and a lucky find for me. I feel bitten by the sailing bug and so definitely intend to return to do the Day Skipper course under your instruction (when I’ve completed my theory part). Looking forward to returning to Oban.
Just a quick note to say thank you for an excellent week. I learned an awful lot but I guess what I learned most of all was how little I knew and how much there is still to learn.
I cannot find enough superlatives for your teaching skills. I rate holidays by what I have learned and experienced. This rates among the highest.

I had an excellent week on board. I learned an awful lot and have also realised that there are lots of rungs in the ladder of knowledge for us to climb.
For me the experience of sussing the weather and moving around with safety under sail in those wind-strengths was amazing. This was all down to your competence, amazing appraisal of options and the high quality of teaching and method. The boat gave out the same calm strength and confidence – not surprising, since you built her. There seemed so many examples of detailed design in the fittings and gear which were born of much experience. There are many other things I could mention,..apple crumble, gingerbread, ground coffee and the other excellent victualling.
We thought Brian was excellent in sorting out a route each day and giving us the confidence to sail in such conditions. He looked after us well and nothing seemed too much for him.

I have sailed all over Europe and the UK, completed two Atlantic crossings and recently passed my Yachtmaster Offshore exam all of which had its origins on ‘Duet’ casting off from the North Pier back in 2000 when I didn’t know one end of a yacht from the other.
I couldn’t begin to tell you just how nervous I was before joining Aquila, but after experiencing 5 of the most exciting days of my recent years I was really sorry it all had to come to an end.
I had a thoroughly good time and learned so much from you. I feel so much more confident about everything about sailing now, so hopefully a flotilla holiday in Turkey will actually happen this year.
Your teaching technique is great, and the excellent comments about your cooking are well justified.
I would like to commend Brian, made us work at it but his attitude and manner were superb and his teaching skills were first class. He also had the patience of Job.
I just wanted to thank you for an excellent 5 days aboard Aquila. I felt refreshed and relaxed by the end of the course as well as having a learned a lot about sailing. As you know it was my first real experience of sailing so it was all new to me. Your patience and easy going manner made it a very enjoyable time.
Both my wife and myself completed the RYA Competent Crew course in August 2012 and we would thoroughly recommend Oban Sea School to anyone considering such a course. We found Robert to be a fantastic instructor who has a huge depth of knowledge and a wonderful and easy going way of teaching it to others. He delivered the course in a very dedicated and thorough way teaching us much more than we had ever hoped to learn and much more than we felt was expected of him. This along with his legendary cooking, amazing boat and spectacular West Coast scenery made for one of the best experiences we have had in years.
Many thanks once again,
Stuart and Samantha Hercher
